Geek Love – how to please a geek girl

July15

Inspired by my wonderful geek guy, and all the awesome stuff he has done to entertain and take care of me, I have decided to share some tips on behaviour that may help you attract and hold onto a geek girl.

Movie magic
Most geek girls will love nothing more than a night in front of the screen, snuggled up to her man. Impress a single geek girl, or continue to enchant your long term geek, by seeking out obscure but awesome screen gems that you think she will love. Of course she will no doubt have many great film suggestions of her own, so take note, and of course be prepared to chat about them afterwards.

Object of her affection
If you have to buy your gal a gift don’t go for traditional girlish clichés, instead do a bit of investigation and find out what kind of action figures, books, gadgets, comics, games or collectables she is into. Surprising her with an action figure may seem silly, but will mean more to her than countless boring and inappropriate gifts she has had to look grateful for.

Read between the lines
Nerdier ladies tend to spend a lot of time with their noses burried in books or comics. Be sure to give them time to enjoy such solitary hobbies, better yet try out her favourites so you can chat about them and suggest others she might enjoy. Getting her a book or comic you think she will love is never a bad idea.

Face Facts
While others might love a cheeky chatup line, or swoon over a smooth talker, your geekier lady will be smitten if you impress her with some suitably interesting facts. Of course I don’t suggest you bore her to tears reciting an entire series of QI, but a few well timed geek references will impress her as much as it would your geeky mates, plus it will give her a chance to pull out some of her own.

Cyber Love
If your woman is a geek she will no doubt use the internet and may communicate a lot via instant messenger apps, sms, email, twitter, her blog… you get the idea. Unless you actively use these tools you might find yourself missing out on a lot of geek girl time, so sign up for her prepared messenger app and be sure to comment on her blog.

Playing Around
Many relationship guides will tell you not to play games, but if you are involved with a geek you better be prepared to play and get your ass kicked! It might be console gaming, boardgames, a massive online game or facebook scrabble, but most of us geeks have a real competitive streak and will want you to take part. Make sure you resist the urge to say you let us win because we are girls, we know you didn’t.

Food for thought
Your geeky lady might be a fantastic cook, but at some point she will be too busy writing code or raiding to cook dinner, so you will need to be a modern man and make sure your cooking skills are top notch. All ladies love being spoiled, so cooking a delicious meal or even making some cupcakes will earn you a lot of points.

That should cover it, as long as you bear these tips in mind and don’t patronise your geek girl or doubt her skills you will do well.

With most relationships, it’s not about doing one or two token things, it’s about truly being interested in your partner and if you aren’t, to say as much. Sure, early on you can gain someone’s favor by quoting Captain Shiny Pants or correcting someone on their vulcanology facts. But to make it work, you have to find common ground AND be willing to meet them half way on their geekiness.

Unless of course you are a geek guy, in which case you’re already in. Just stop fighting over the controller.

“Present Face” by Garfunkel and Oates. Great rendition of a geek girl *not* getting the action figure.

There are so many kinds of geeks these days that it is hard to tell if you are a geek or not. Plenty of non-geeky people use computers and messenger programs a lot. Signs that you are an honest to goodness geek girl include: knowing all the words to a monty python skit or movie, loving a video game character (really loving), having 1000+ hours of your life in games, owning an action figure collection larger than your shelves can handle, playing any table top roleplaying game, knowing how to program in at least one language, and wishing heaven were one huge comics/games/anime convention and/or ren-fair.

If none or only one of these describe you, you may be a perfectly normal not geeky person.
